Abstract: Qian Hexagram is the essence of Yijing and it is the symbol of heaven, which encourage us to be strong and positive. Different stages of it is revealed in this Hexagram: hidden dragon, appearing dragon, watchful dragon, leaping dragon, flying dragon and haughty dragon and it shows us the whole process of Yang Qi from its germination, development, prosperity to its extinction.

Dragon, in some western culture, it is described as a mythical monster; a fierce, violent person; a severely watchful woman, a formidable woman; a name of Satan, etc. However, dragon, the Chinese Long, represents the force of goodness in the ancient Chinese culture. In this hexagram we follow the development of a powerful idea or strong decisions through the metaphor of the dragon and it will bring you a good fortune and great success. Remember, success may cause arrogance and lead to eventual failure.

The meaning of the Qian hexagram: Pure Yang. It symbolizes the heaven, and heaven embodies all that is strong, creative, initiative, moving forwards. There will be rise and fall during one’s life and it is difficult for one to control the situation sometimes and only in the process of unceasing experience and hard work that he can learn to grasp the opportunity, find a way out of the dilemma and march from one success to another success.

Wisdom revelations: Qian Hexagram is the essence of Yijing and it is the symbol of heaven, which encourage us to be strong and positive. Different stages of it is revealed in this Hexagram: hidden dragon, appearing dragon, watchful dragon, leaping dragon, flying dragon and haughty dragon and it shows us the whole process of Yang Qi from its germination, development, prosperity to its extinction. It reveals the philosophy that everything would go through the same process: from the newborn to its very back end; when reaching its top, going down hill is unavoidable. Its interpretation for modern times can be: when your career goes smoothly, work even harder, act more cautiously to avoid going down hill and being devastated.

Different position of Qian Hexagram can be matched different stages of human life:

_______ Prosperity would end up in declination (haughty dragon)
       _______Showing one’s talents (flying dragon)
       _______Waiting for chances (leaping dragon)
_______ Making endeavor alertly (watchful dragon)
_______ Showing one’s ability and talent for the first time (appearing dragon)
_______ Hiding in wait (hidden dragon)

In the course of life, the situation of each individual will always fluctuated; there will always be good and bad. In difficult situations or when one is still not strong enough, one should have the courage to face difficult, gather strength in secret, wait for an opportunity and must not be swayed by personal feelings. This is the revelation of “the dragon lies hidden in the deep, takes no action”. When growing stronger in strength but still not strong enough at the time, one has to act gentleman-likely", that is to be good at using the power of others to help himself so as to stand out from the predicament and seek further development. This is the revelation of “Showing one’s ability and talent for the first time for the appearing dragon”. With the development of strength gradually, one has been out of his plight. His job, career are successfully developed, all he has to do is to be more diligent and good at drawing lessons, balancing gains and losses, continuing to make positive efforts. As the old saying goes: “a learned gentleman would make a retrospection everyday”. This is because that nothing can remain absolutely unchanged: success will probably end up with failure, so as the interchanging of happiness and misfortune. In order to remain invincible, we must be humble at all time. This is the revelation of “making endeavor alertly for a watchful dragon”. When becoming more powerful at the time, caution is particularly important in order to grasp the opportunity for the further development. One would better work conscientiously, strive even harder. This is the revelation of “a leaping dragon waiting for chances”. When reaching the peak of one’s career—the brilliant moment in one’s lifetime, the most important thing you need to do is to tap the potential in a full range of one’s own, to mobilize all forces around you, to bring all sorts of elements into full play, to achieve a more ambitious future. This is the revelation of “a flying dragon showing his talents”. It is obvious for one to recognize that even when one reaches one’s brilliant moment in his life time, he should be alert to the changes around him and adapt himself to the new surroundings. This is because everything in the universe would be change to its opposite, e.g. from Yang to Yin. Try not to reach any extremes and make sure when to advance and when to retreat. This is the revelation from “Haughty dragon: prosperity would end up in declination”.

The revelation from Qian Hexagram: There are ups and downs during our life time, as the surge and recession of the tide and the change from full moon to a new one. Whatever which stage of life we are in, we must aim higher, be strong, aggressive and strive for self-perfection.Yao and Shun were two enlightened emperors of our ancient times, and Shun was appointed as Yao’s successor only after his own inspection, in which Yao found Shun’s merits and dignified will when confronting danger and hardship. When this news spread, those who had ulterior motives spread all sorts of rumors. Yao refuted each kind of rumor with facts. Therefore, Emperor Yao carried on strict test on Shun. Shun also took the matter easy, accepted each kind of test bravely, finally, the facts proved all. This literary reference happened to interpret the ancient divination symbol, the third yao of Qian hexagram. The entire principle which the ancient divination symbol expanded in Qian hexagram is that a gentleman should strive for self-improvement constantly. Moreover, he must be careful and work even harder during the peroid of smooth development of his enterprise.

Just as Mao Zedong wrote in his poetry: “Red Army do not fear the hardship of the Long Match. It is a commonplace for them to experience the trials of a long and arduous journey”. As we all know, things are consisted of different stages and different thing has to be done in each different interval. What we should do is to have the right thing done at the right time, neither too hasty nor too lazy. Do wait patiently for an opportunity to come, avoid invalid action to waste your time and energy. The best thing for you to do is to enrich yourself by all means, like a sponge absorbs water, then wait patiently for the opportunity to come. As the saying goes: “it may not have cried out yet, but once it does, it will startle everyone.” One thing we would like to emphasize is that, if a person who truly believes in and practice the principle of “strong-willed and striving constantly for self-improvement” from the Qian hexagram will be in no way withdrow when confront any setback or difficulty,  will be in no way feel desperately about the future after any failure. Any withdrawal and desperation is only the embodiment of human’s frailty and self-denial and will accomplish nothing but pain eventually.
